KEN SPARKS

Criminal Law Specialist

Ken Sparks graduated from the University of Texas and the University of Texas School of Law. Mr. Sparks began his legal career with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office in Houston in 1973. He rose to the position of Chief Prosecutor, trying numerous murder and capital murder cases. Ken was also in charge of training newly-hired prosecutors. Mr. Sparks then became a partner in a major Houston criminal defense law firm for over 15 years.

COUNTY & DISTRICT ATTORNEY

When Mr. Sparks and his family relocated to Colorado County, Texas, he ran for and was elected to the combined position of County and District Attorney handling felony, misdemeanor and juvenile cases. In addition to felony trials, Mr. Sparks also handled all grand jury presentations in felony cases and became intimately familiar with the grand jury process. He handled all the plea negotiations on felony cases and supervised the work of two other prosecutors on his eight-person staff in misdemeanor and juvenile cases.

TDCAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

During his time in office, Ken Sparks served on the Board of Directors of the Texas District & County Attorneys Association (TDCAA) comprised of all prosecutors in Texas. In addition to serving on the TDCAA training committee, he testified regularly before the Texas Legislature in support of changes to Texas criminal laws. He is a popular speaker, having been invited to speak at numerous seminars conducted by TDCAA and criminal defense lawyer organizations.

SPARKS LAW FIRM CRIMINAL ADVISOR

After serving in office for 12 years, he and his wife moved to Fort Worth, TX to be near their two sons and three grandchildren. He now serves as a legal advisor to his son, Justin Sparks, and assists in many of the firm’s trial cases. Mr. Sparks recently completed the 10th edition of his Offense Report Manual published by TDCAA for all police officers in Texas, which he revises every two years to incorporate the most recent legislative changes.

CRIMINAL LAW SPECIALIST

Ken Sparks has been Board Certified in criminal law for 40 years by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Ken has tried misdemeanor cases ranging from DWI to assault to possession of marijuana and felony cases ranging from auto theft to intoxication manslaughter to aggravated assault to drug trafficking to murder. During his career, he has handled thousands of criminal cases as both a prosecutor and defense attorney.
